Proud Neighborhoods of Novi Sad is a Propaganda Department project that started in 2015. The idea was, and the still is, to create heraldry for every major neighborhood in Novi Sad, Republic of Serbia. Heraldry that will stay with people, not just a new fad that will pass in few months.
This particular heraldry is loosely based on Freemason signage and insignia mixed with signs of American gangs from early 1920 to 1950.
Also, this correlation is not the coincidence. Although this city was populated even in Neolithic times, Modern Novi Sad neighborhoods rose in the 20th century. Heaving this in mind it is understandable that some of the archetypes used here draw directly from modern times, like spray cans, razor blades, etc.
Every design went through the same process of creation. The first step is to draw graphics on the tablet entirely by hand. After that, design is vectorised, and typography is added in Illustrator. Seems simple, but there is a lot of research involved in every single layout. Typography needs to correspond with hand drawn design.
